The seven key competencies identified in the text are:
- self (including self-assessment, goal setting, balancing work and personal life, and engaging in new learning),
- communication (including the exchange and understanding of various forms of information through a variety of media),
- diversity (including valuing and respecting the uniqueness of individuals and groups as potential sources of organizational strength),
- ethics (including the incorporation of values and principles to distinguish right from wrong in decision making and behavior),
- across cultures (including embracing national and cultural similarities and differences in an open-minded fashion from the perspective of key organizational and strategic issues),
- teams (including developing and facilitating the achievement of organizational goals by groups), and
- change (including the recognition and implementation of adaptations and/or transformations of people, tasks, strategies, structures, or technologies within the person's area of responsibility).
