Interrelationships between the seven foundation competencies in OB

A competency is an interrelated cluster of knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by an individual to be effective.
The seven foundation competencies identified
  1. self,
  2. communication,
  3. diversity,
  4. ethics,
  5. across cultures,
  6. teams, and
  7. change.
These competencies are highly interrelated, and it is not feasible to draw rigid boundaries between them. These interrelationships are illustrated in the situation described. The employee's purchase of a personal computer for use at home for exploring Internet sites that might help enhance her job performance and the performance of her team may be considered a manifestation of the following competencies:
  • self (engaging in new learning),
  • communication (transferring information electronically),
  • teams and change (attempting to develop new ways achieve organizational goals, both individually and through her team). Depending upon the assumptions specified, an argument could also be made for including the
  • ethics competency (spending her own money rather than taking a company computer home, where it might also be used for personal purposes), and the
  •  diversity and across cultures competencies (if web sites relevant to these topics were explored).
